Carothers and Weller help the Rustlers sweep the Broncos in weekend series

The Lakeland College King's Energy Group Rustlers and Olds College Broncos tangled in a Saturday matinee affair at the Russ Robertson Arena. The Broncos were looking to rebound after last night's 2-0 loss while the Rustlers were looking to make it two in a row this weekend. The Rustlers skated to a 2-1 shootout victory in a back and forth affair this afternoon.

The first period was a slow start for both teams. The Broncos had a power play opportunity halfway through the period as Asha Petrie took a minor penalty for tripping. Rustlers defenceman Ava Cole and Broncos forward Hailey Hoogkamp took offsetting coincidental minor penalties late in the period. Both teams were unable to score on Cienna Kinghorn of the Broncos and Chantel Weller of the Rustlers. Olds would outshoot Lakeland 7-6 in the opening frame.

The second period would have Olds dictate more of the play than Lakeland. The Broncos would outshoot the Rustlers 12-7 in the frame. The Broncos would have two power play opportunities but were unable to convert against Weller and the Rustlers. Lakeland would strike with 1:45 left in the frame as Hailey Carothers would convert on a 2 on 1 with Ellie Baril. The Rustlers would take a 1-0 lead into the third period.

The third period would be a much more open period than the previous two frames. The Rustlers would outshoot the Broncos 15-11 in the frame. Kalea Sauder would take an interference penalty with 10:37 left in the third period and just as she exited the penalty box, the Broncos would strike even. Jerika Pashniak would strike with assists going to Avery Kendall and Keera Tiringer. Both teams would apply intense pressure to Kinghorn and Weller but both goalies blocked any possessions and the teams would go to overtime.

In the first overtime of 4 on 4 play, the teams played a close game. Each team had great chances but again, Weller and Kinghorn stood on their respective heads. Both teams would have two shots each on net. In the second overtime period of 3 on 3 play, the Rustlers would be the aggressor. The team pushed for the win and had five shots on net Kinghorn. The Broncs would get two great opportunities on Weller only to be thwarted. The teams would head to a shootout. Final shots on goal were 35-34 for Lakeland after regulation and overtime.

In the shootout, the Broncos would send Ali Macaulay first, but she was unsuccessful in her attempt. The Rustlers countered with Mackenzie Stafford but Kinghorn stopped her. Olds would send Tessa Knisely on Weller but the Rustlers goalie shut the door. Lakeland would send Hailey Carothers to shoot in round two and she continued her torrid scoring pace, beating Kinghorn on a great deke. The Broncos sent Avery Kendall out for their final shooter but Weller shut the door on the Broncos forward.

Players of the game were Hailey Carothers for Lakeland and Cienna Kinghorn for Olds. The Broncos return to action with a home and home series with NAIT while the Rustlers take advantage of their bye weekend.
