Mann and the Rustlers defense shut out the Broncos

The Lakeland College King's Energy Group Rustlers and Olds College Broncos tangled in a Friday night tilt in Lloydminster. The Rustlers were looking to get back to their winning ways, having suffered back to back losses to the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens last weekend. The Rustlers scored an early goal and empty netter to skate to a 2-0 victory over the Broncos.

In the first period, the Rustlers dictated the play and were rewarded just forty three seconds into the period. Hailey Carothers notched her league leading 12th goal of the season past Broncos goalie Cienna Kinghorn with Ava Cole drawing the primary assist. The Rustlers and Broncos were busy in the penalty box with each team taking two minors in the first period plus a set of coincidental minors were assessed. Shots on goal were 15-8 for the Rustlers

The second period had a different pace as both teams were able to stay out of the penalty box and generate scoring chances. The Rustlers took a late penalty in the second period but goaltender Mackenzie Dojahn foiled any Broncos attempts on the power play. The Broncos would outshoot the Rustlers 9-8 in the period but Lakeland held a 1-0 lead heading to period three.

In the final period, the Broncos and Rustlers each provided the opposition with an opportunity on the man advantage but Kinghorn and Dojahn proved too tough to beat. Coach Matt McKnight would call a timeout with 1:35 left in period three and pull Kinghorn for the extra attacker. Thanks to a great shot block by forward Mackenzie Stafford, Hailey Carothers was able to break in on a 2 on 1 and bury one in the empty net to secure the Rustlers 2-0 victory.

Shots on goal for the third period were 9-8 for the Broncos again and overall, Lakeland held a 31-26 advantage for the game. Players of the game were Jessie Jack for the Broncos and Olivia Mann for the Rustlers. Both teams will take the night to rest and recover before concluding things for the weekend on Saturday February 11th. Puck drop will be at 2pm in Lloydminster at the Russ Robertson Arena.
