The Queens avenge Thursday nights loss with a commanding victory over the Broncos

Red Deer, January 28, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens after a day break got the result they wanted against the Olds College Broncos. The Broncos defeated the Queens on Thursday night with a 4-2 win.

The Queens would open the scoring on the powerplay with a great wrist shot from the blue line by Kyla Hansel (Pharmacy Technician Diploma), which managed to make it through a lot of traffic in front of the Broncos net.

Four minutes later, Madison Sansom (Social Work) walked in from the blue line and fired a wrist shot past a screened Broncos goaltender Cienna Kinghorn (Agriculture and Heavy Equipment) to give the Queens an early 2-0 lead.

The goals would keep coming from the Queens as Brenna Reid (Bachelor of Kinesiology) added her name to the score sheet after she fired a wrist shot from the top of the faceoff circle. With bodies in front of the net, Kinghorn had trouble finding the puck and it made its way to the back of the net.

Due to the puck being covered in the crease by a player's glove, the Queens were awarded a penalty shot but they could not capitalize on it as Kinghorn came up big for her team with a save.

But they would add to their lead with 25 seconds to go after forward Natalie Buttle sent herself on a breakaway. She went forehand to backhand as she slid it just out of the reach of the Broncos goaltender to give the Queens a 4-0 lead as they head into the second period.

The Broncos would open the second period by scoring with a tap-in goal from Avery Kendall (Sports Management). Kendall was left wide-open in front of the net and received a pass across the goal crease, and she was able to tap it into a wide-open net.

But moments later, the Queens would pick up not one but two goals. The fifth goal came off a two-on-two rush where Kassy Gaudette (Bachelor of Science) cut into the middle and fire a backhand shot top corner from inside the slot for a highlight reel goal. The sixth goal went to Buttle, which happened to be her second on the night and fourth on the year.

At the end of the second period, the Queens led 6-1 and outshot the Broncos 20-13.

After a very uneventful third period, the Queens added to their goal total with 15 seconds left to finish the game with a 7-1 win. Forward Tasha Barsby finished a pass from forward Avery Lajeunnesse for her first career ACAC goal.

The Broncos player of the game went to forward Avery Kendall with the only goal for her team (Sports Management) and the Queens player of the game went to Natalie Buttle, who had two goals on the night.

The Queens will be back in action in Lloydminster to take on the Lakeland College Rustlers at 7 pm next Friday with the Broncos hosting the SAIT Trojans next Thursday.
