Rustlers spread out the scoring to sweep weekend set with Trojans

The Lakeland College King's Energy Group Rustlers wrapped up their two game homestand series against the SAIT Trojans out of Calgary on Saturday January 21st with an afternoon matinee. 

The first period was a busy period as the Rustlers and Trojans each took four minor penalties. With all the power plays, goalies Chantel Weller and Ali Kieren were busy in the pipes defending their net. The Trojans would strike first at 3:12 as Pyper Alexander beat Weller to open the scoring. Assists would go to Tamryn Ward and Reauna Blight. The Rustlers would strike first as Hailey Carothers would tie the game at 4:58. Assists to Ellie Baril and Kalea Sauder. Kennedy Taylor would notch the second goal of the game for the Rustlers with the primary assist going to Janay Williams. Just before the end of the period, Carothers would notch her second of the period with assists going to Olivia Mann and Ava Cole. Shots on goal were 16-7 for the Rustlers after period one. 

The second period was a slower pace as the Rustlers and Trojans stayed out of the penalty box. The Rustlers would take three minor penalties and were successful on scoring a goal on the first one. With Paris Appel serving a minor for interference, Janay Williams ripped a shot from the slot that beat Ali Kieren top shelf. The Rustlers would lead 4-1 after the second period. Shots on goal were 15-10 for the Rustlers in that period and 31-17 overall for the game after two periods of play. 

The third period saw one goal for each team as Laiken Swan scored at the 7:58 mark for the Rustlers before Tamryn Ward closed out the scoring for the Trojans at 19:14. Final score from the Russ Robertson Arena was 5-2 for Lakeland College King's Energy Group Rustlers.

Final shots on goal 48-21were in favour of the Rustlers. Players of the game for each team were Janay Williams (1G, 1A) for the Rustlers and Pyper Alexander (1G) for the Trojans. Next action for the SAIT Trojans is a road game in Olds against the Broncos on February 2nd. The Rustlers return to play on Friday January 27th with a road game in Edmonton against the Ooks.
