Ooks unable to hold off Griffins

EDMONTON, Alta. - The NAIT Ooks women's hockey team couldn't hold off the MacEwan Griffins on Saturday night as they fell 3-1.

After a hard-fought first period resulting in little offense on either side, in the dying seconds, Cassidy Shandro tipped a Bryanna Merill point shot past Griffins goalie Brianna Sank to give the home team a 1-0 lead early at the first intermission.

The second period was another gridlocked twenty minutes, resulting in scoring chances for both teams, but no goals. Early in the third period, MacEwan's Sydney Hughson took a Shyla Kirwer pass from the corner and managed to squeak it past Kaitlyn Slator to tie the game at one.

In the final frame, Morgan Casson found the puck in the slot and rifled over Slator's glove to give the visiting team a 2-1 lead. The Ooks were unable to generate the offense needed to tie the game, Casson added an empty-net goal late to take a 3-1 victory.
