Broncos fall 2-1 to RDC Queens

The Olds College Broncos women's hockey team lost against the Red Deer College Queens at the "Olds College Student Staff and Faculty Appreciation" game on Thursday, January 23, 2020 at the Olds Sportsplex. 

The first period started really well for the Broncos, having newcomer, Danika Dahlin score her first ACAC goal at 4:12 from Brynne Doerksen and Bree Edwards. First penalty of the night went to Broncos Maddy Black for hooking at 4:54. Broncos second penalty of the night went to Kassy Gaudette at 18:33 for  body contact. 

Shots at the end of the first period were 19-9 for the Queens. With the Broncos leading the scoreboard 1-0 over the Queens with Gaudette still in the penalty box. 

The second period was a quiet one with three penalties. Red Deer College's Madison Sansom had a body contact penalty at 6:55. Second penalty in the period went to Broncos number 11, Maddy Black for interference at 7:49 and RDC Queens number 7, Ashley Sutherland for slashing at 14:57. 

Shots in the second period were 16 for Red Deer College Queens and 11 for the Broncos. 

Third period was busy with Broncos Fioana Milligan being sent to the box for handling puck at 7:11. This put RDC into a power play coming out successful with Ashley Sutherland putting the puck in the net, assisted by number 21, Camryn Wallan at 7:43. Late in the period we saw RDC's number 17, Mariah Mckersie score the game winning goal assisted from number 93, Brooklyn Rowles and 7, Ashley Sutherland at 18:43.

Final shots for the night were 30-43 for the RDC Queens. 

Player of the Game for the RDC Queens 7,  Ashley Sutherland and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Olds College Broncos was number 31 Lexi Bruce. 

The first period was full of Broncos action, with Danika Dahlin scoring her first ACAC goal followed by back to back Broncos penalties. The second period was all around quieter with not a lot of action but some great shots by RDC and big saves by Broncos Lexi Bruce. Broncos couldn't keep the lead as RDC tied it up 1-1 and ultimately scored the game winning goal late in the third period. 

Catch Broncos women's hockey next week for the Cystic FIbrosis Awareness Night as they host the NAIT Ooks on January 30, 2020. Puck drops at 7:00pm at the Olds Sportsplex.
