Eagles Hold Onto Top Spot With Win Over Vikings
The King's University Eagles women's basketball team took on the Augustana Vikings at the King's University at 6pm on January 24.
The first quarter saw the Vikings come out strong. Locked in defensively and hitting important shots. Ella O'Hara went 2/2 from deep in the quarter, helping the vikings take a 7pt lead halfway through the 1st. The Eagles came alive after that thanks to Jamie Bunting's 8 first quarter points off the bench.
The second quarter started with the Eagles up 7 pts. King's was strong through the 2nd thanks to big plays by Kayla Soetart and Jordana Rivet who both had 7 pts in the quarter. Vikings struggled with their shooting this quarter going 1/9 from the 3pt line. Strong play by Mallory Ogilvie, 4pts 3reb, and Maren Macdonalad, 5pts, helped the Vikings keep the deficit at 12 going into half time.
Third quarter was more of the same for the Eagles. The Eagles out rebounded the Vikings by 12 rebounds in the quarter while also forcing multiple turnovers and turning them into fast break points. Ella Majeau led the Eagles with 5 points in this quarter while also adding a few big assists late in the quarter. Alex Asunicon led the Vikings with 5pts in the 3rd, none bigger than a 3 pointer part way through that helped keep the Eagles lead below 20.
In the fourth the Eagles slowed the game down. Running more offensive sets to completion and pulling down 5 offensive rebounds allowed them to control the clock down the stretch. Ball movement was also key. This was shown through the teams 5 assists in the quarter, 3 of which came from Ella Majeau. The Vikings had their lowest points per quarter of the game but continued to push hard to the end. Shooting 8 free throws in the quarter showing that they continued to press the floor and try to earn points inside.
