Clippers Triumph Over SAIT

by Jeff Misener

The SAIT Trojans (8-7) travelled to Caronport to face the Briercrest Clippers (9-7) in women's basketball action. Briercrest holds the final playoff position in the ACAC South Division and looked to stretch their winning streak to five.

Staunch defense featured for both teams as the hosts opened a 9-0 lead halfway through the opening frame. The Clippers' menacing defense forced numerous SAIT errors, but the visitors eventually settled down to connect on a few open shots. Briercrest enjoyed a 19-12 advantage after one quarter.

SAIT ramped up the defensive pressure and found their shooting touch as guard Brook Baker awakened her team's offense. Clippers' guard Dori Sunderland caused headaches for the Trojans with her speed and energy. In the latter stages of the quarter, the Clippers gained traction on the offensive end with an assortment of drives resulting in fouls. An offensive board and putback by Eve Duerksen gave the Caronport school a 34-32 halftime edge.

In the third quarter, all the Clippers' starters found success at the rim, with Brooklyn Martens and Amber Fichtner also asserting themselves on the offensive boards. After Fichtner bullied her way inside for a three point play, Baker and Macy Mulholland hit a trio of treys to keep SAIT competitive. A Maddison Beattie triple stretched the lead to 57-45 for the home team.

The last quarter saw Martens attack the rim and clean the defensive boards with authority. Baker continued to lead SAIT as her teammates struggled to find open looks. Midway through the frame, SAIT's Vanessa Cormier's three point play cut the gap to five before Sunderland responded. The Clippers managed their lead and the clock to secure a 70-60 victory.

Player of the Game for SAIT, with 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals, was Macy Mulholland. Teammate Brook Baker had a game-high 22 points. Briercrest's Maddison Beattie connected on four triples and added five rebounds to earn the recognition, while Brooklyn Martens notched 18 points, 13 rebounds and four steals in support.
