Briercrest Defeat SAIT to Extend Winning Streak to Six

by Jeff Misener

Following Friday's strong performance, the Briercrest Clippers (10-7) looked to solidify their playoff future as they tipped off against the SAIT Trojans (8-8) in ACAC South Division women's basketball. SAIT's season has been filled with illness, injury, and inconsistency, but coach Ranbir Parmar expressed optimism that his squad could regain that early form and secure a postseason berth.

In a carbon copy of Friday's game, the Clippers raced out to a quick lead, with guard Dori Sunderland knocking down layups on three consecutive possessions. Melissa Ellis and Amber Fichtner also connected from close range, as Briercrest fused their interior scoring with tough defense to build a 20-8 advantage.

Kyler Varga catalyzed SAIT's offense as the visitors quickly eclipsed their first quarter scoring. The Trojans reduced the deficit to three as Varga's teammate Brook Baker completed a threepoint play and Melissa Cormier connected from range. After Baker and Maddison Beattie traded triples, the teams retreated to their dressing rooms with Briercrest ahead, 34-30.

SAIT owned a brief lead on threes from Macy Mulholland and Varga before Eve Duerksen put back her own miss. Throughout the quarter, Briercrest profited from the diligent inside scoring and relentless rebounding of Fichtner and Martens in surging to a 49-40 lead.

Mulholland splashed a three to open the final quarter. After Fichtner retreated to the bench with her fourth foul, the Clippers expanded their lead as Sydney Latrace hit a pair of treys, Duerksen scored off another offensive putback, and Martens controlled the boards. Briercrest played stifling defense throughout the frame and romped to a convincing 68-55 triumph.

Brook Baker led SAIT with 13 points and nine rebounds, earning Player of the Game recognition. Macy Mulholland supported Baker with 11 points and seven boards. For Briercrest, Melissa Ellis complemented her usual unyielding defensive with seven boards, six points, three assists, and three steals, to receive the award. Amber Fichtner notched a game-high 15 points and 10 boards for the host team.
