Clippers complete weekend sweep in Olds

The Briercrest College Clippers made the most of their opportunities, defeating the Olds College Broncos 60-55 at the Ralph Klein Centre on Saturday to complete a weekend sweep between the two sides.

Brooklyn Martens led all scorers with 15 points to go with 10 rebounds for Briercrest (9-7), while Player of the Game Amber Fichtner was dominant on the glass with 12 points and 17 rebounds, which played a large role in Briercrest outrebounding Olds College 49-35.

On the other side, Caitlin Paul led the Broncos (7-9) with 11 points to go with seven rebounds, while Blu Rose, Rio Yamazaki and Player of the Game Noa Jessen each had 10 points.

The Clippers controlled the majority of the flow in the opening quarter in going up 21-17, with Dori Sunderland scoring seven of her eight points in the frame, complemented by six from Fichtner.

Briercrest would continue to build its lead and push it into double-digits, but Jessen brought the Broncos back into the game with a pair of late threes to cut the Clippers' lead to 35-31 at halftime.

The late momentum enabled the Broncos to push back early in the third quarter to take a 40-39 lead, but Briercrest would re-establish itself from there, with a 7-0 run helping to stake them to a 49-44 lead entering the fourth, where they led by as many as 14 late. The Broncos made it interesting by cutting the lead from 10 to five in the final minute, but would not get any closer.

Next up, Briercrest will welcome the SAIT Trojans for two games in Caronport beginning Friday at 5 p.m. MST, while the Broncos will travel up Highway 2 to battle the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens on Friday at 6 p.m.
