Lightning strike twice in weekend sweep over Rattlers

The St. Mary's Lightning headed into the Snake Pit at Medicine Hat College to take on the Rattlers in the second half of a home and home. Having won the first game, the guests looked to sweep the weekend. Medicine Hat did not want another loss and came out playing aggressive defence. This allowed them to get a few stops early before the teams traded baskets. Both teams were allowing shots, but neither side could make with efficiency and the score remained within one. St. Mary's started to penetrate and started making baskets inside. With this they opened up a 14-6 lead with 3 minutes left in the quarter. A late timeout from the Rattlers looked to regroup after another lightning basket putting them up 10. Another few baskets and the Lightning led 21-6 at the quarter.

The Rattlers took possession to start the quarter and were quickly able to put 2 points on the board. The Lightning quickly answered before both teams again went cold. Scoring slowed through the early part of the quarter and defence was at a premium. The Rattlers started to heat up first, narrowing the margin as the clock ticked past halfway. The Lightning were able to keep the Rattlers at arms reach, as they took a 36-26 lead into half.

The second half started with a pair of stops on both ends. Neither team looked especially sharp as both teams were taking low percentage shots. The Lightning finally broke through and were able to start the scoring halfway through the quarter. The teams both started to score, but progress was slow. The Lightning started to press and score at will late. But 5 late points from the Rattlers cut St. Mary's lead, 49-37.

The fourth quarter started with the teams maintaining their scoring momentum from the third with the teams exchanging on their first trips down the floor. The Rattlers looking for more points quickly turned to the 3 pointer. They made their first but missed the next two attempts allowing the Lightning to answer and extend their lead. The game slowed down with a ton of whistles and the teams started to get to the foul line. The clock slowed to a crawl as the Lightning were continuing to slowly pull away. At the end the Lightning took home a 76-49 victory.
