WBB| Kodiaks Make Big 4th Quarter Comeback but Fall in Heartbreaking OT Loss to the Ambrose Lions

January 28, 2023- The Kodiaks faced off against a struggling Ambrose University Lions who were riding a 3-game losing streak as the Kodiaks looked to secure 2 points to tie themselves for 1st in the south division alongside the STMU Lightning.

Both teams got off to a slow start as the action progressively grew as the quarter went on with Kodiaks #10 Kitawna Sparks led the charge for the Kodiaks grabbing 8 points in the 1st which would have been enough to hold off the Lions from jumping ahead until the dying seconds led to a Lions free throw which pushed them ahead with the 1st quarter coming to a close with the Lions edging out Lethbridge with a 14-12 lead.

Ambrose was able to maintain the momentum they picked up at the end of 1st quarter which allowed them to earn themselves a bit of a lead over the Kodiaks which kept them ahead throughout the 2nd quarter with Lions #9 Nya Gach earning 5 points before the Kodiaks made a push late to make up some ground which got the Kodiaks back within 1 point thanks to a late basket from Kodiaks Catriona Smith but fell short headed into halftime with a 23-22 lead for the Lions.

The Kodiaks got off to a slow start in the 3rd quarter as they didn't get their first bucket until the 4-minute mark which give Ambrose plenty of time to build a lead. However, once the Kodiaks got the icebreaker they were able to get things rolling and make up some ground before the 3rd came to a close with the Lions holding a 43-30 lead.

The Kodiaks knew it was now or never if they wanted a chance of getting back in this game, and that's exactly what they did. The Lions were caught flat-footed and weren't able to generate any offense allowing Lethbridge to start their comeback. The Kodiaks were able to tie the game up after the 2-minute warning and force overtime after 2 missed free throws and a shot clock violation from the Lions kept things locked at 49-49 after 4 quarters.

Overtime was kept very tight as it was kept within a basket of each other throughout. With the Lions securing a crucial 3-pointer and going 3 for 4 on free throws, the Kodiaks comeback fell short as Ambrose was able to stay ahead and secure the OT win 57-53.
