The Queens make it six in a row with a 20-point win over the Trojans

Red Deer, January 27, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens came into this game on a five-game winning streak and were put to the test as they battled with the SAIT Trojans, who are coming off back-to-back losses against the Olds College Broncos. But even so, these two teams are neck-and-neck in the South Division and unless some miracle happens, it is going to be a tight finish until playoff week.

Due to traveling conditions, the game started 15 minutes late.

It was a very quick start for the Queens Basketball team as they jumped out to a 17-6 lead with half to go in the quarter. The offense was really clicking, and they were able to drop their shots. But a tough Trojans squad slowly settled in forcing Queens Head Coach Avery Harrison to call a timeout. For about three of the last five minutes of the quarter, both teams struggled to score, and at the end of the 10 minutes, the Queens led 28-18.

With 2.5 minutes to play before the half, the Trojans called a timeout in what was quite a defensive quarter as both teams just combined for 16 points at this point. Both teams were struggling to penetrate the opposing defensive line, but the Trojans and Queens just could not find the grip of the ball as there were multiple turnovers throughout the second quarter. After their own timeout, the Trojans were able to go on a 9-2 run led by their point leader at the half Brooke Baker (Rehabilitation Therapy), who finished with 17 points. But her team was down 42-29 heading into the third quarter. For the Queens, guard Sandra Garcia-Bernal (Educational Assistant) had a slight lead with 10 points at the half, but it was very much a team effort from the Red Deer women.

After a buzzer-beater by Sadie Jeffries, the Queens walked away with a 60-40 lead going into the final quarter. It did not look pretty to start the second half, however. The Trojans were stopping Red Deer and at one point were outscoring the Queens but were able to break that scoreless streak late in the quarter to find themselves on the right side of a 20-point lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

In the closest quarter of them all, the Queens found a way to push through adversity and walk away with their sixth win in a row with a final score of 74-52.

The players of the game went to Brooke Baker from the Trojans and Sadie Jeffries (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) from the Queens.

Baker had 23 points and 10 rebounds on the night to continue her dominance in the ACAC as she sits in the top five in points per game. Jeffries had 13 points and five rebounds for her Queens.

These two teams will rematch in Calgary tomorrow night at 6 pm.
