The Queens sweep the weekend series with the Lions

Red Deer, January 21, 2023 – In this rematch of last night's victory in Calgary, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens looked to continue their winning ways against a tough Ambrose University Lions team. The Queens were able to walk away with their fourth victory in a row after defeating the Lions 75-64.

24 hours later, the only thing that changed in this match was a venue change. These two teams continued their hard-fought battle from last night in the first quarter of this evening's game. Nearing the end, it looked like the Lions would take the lead into the second quarter as they were getting multiple stops on the Queens, but they battled back to take a one-shot lead with a buzzer-beating layup by forward Peighton Melton (Open Studies).

RDP was able to find their offensive form early in the second as they went on a 10-0 run, but the Lions would follow that up with seven straight points to come within striking distance of the host team. The Queens would head into the locker room with a 37-24 lead after finding their shooting form late in the second. Guard Amy Szymanek (Bachelor of Education) of the Queens had an outstanding 20 minutes with 17 points. For the Lions, the team was led by forward Nya Gach who had eight points. With a low-scoring half for both teams, Ambrose had just four players with points.

The Queens offense exploded in the third quarter as they were able to extend their lead even further putting the Lions on their heels as they head into the final quarter with a score of 60-36. The home team put together a game-high 23 points in the third.

In a very defensive quarter where both teams combined for just a total of 16 points, the Queens were able to walk away with their fifth straight win with a final score of 76-49.

The players of the game went to Lions Andrijana Bokan and Queens Amy Szymanek. Bokan finished with eight rebounds and 10 points. As for Szymanek, she just had two points in the second half but still led her team with 19 points and five rebounds.

The Queens will be back home next week Friday at 6 pm when they take on the SAIT Trojans. The Lions will battle it out with the Lethbridge College Kodiaks in Calgary at 6 pm next Friday as well.
