Women's Basketball Huskies charge ahead in fourth quarter to best Eagles

The Keyano Huskies Women's Basketball team roared ahead in the fourth quarter to earn a 61-55 victory against the visiting King's University Eagles Friday at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre in Fort McMurray, Alta.

Maja Besic had 26 points and 11 rebounds to earn the double-double while Zera Lynn Panesa had 10 points and six assists.

Kayla Soetaert led the visiting Eagles with 17 points while an 11-point effort from Cameryn Hrycun and Casey Belway saw the trio finish in double digits on the day.

Leading 19-13 after the first quarter, the Huskies took advantage of a poor shooting quarter to lead 30-18 at the half. The third quarter was the Eagles' opportunity to strike back as the Huskies scored just seven points to the Eagles' 18, making it a one-point game.

While the Eagles did pull ahead in the fourth quarter, the Huskies were quick to tip back the balance of power, winning the quarter by five and the game by six.

Casey Gorieu and Emma Tomchuk each picked up eight points for the home side Huskies in the win. Ella Majeau came close to double-digits for the Eagles, managing seven points on the night.

Besic earned Player of the Game honours for the home side while Megan Aleman picked up the honours for the visiting Eagles.

The two teams will face each other Saturday, December 3 at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre to close out the weekend.
