St. Mary's Score Comeback Win Over Briercrest

Written by Jeff Misener

The Briercrest Clippers women's basketball team hosted the St. Mary's University Lightning (STMU) in the second of their back-to-back series. Following Friday's runaway win, the Lightning pulled even with the Clippers in the victory column.

Friday's scoring leaders, Clippers' Amber Fichtner and St. Mary's Andria Stitt, opened the proceedings. Lightning guard Maitlynn Wilde relentlessly attacked the interior of the Briercrest defense and converted on several three-point opportunities. For the Clippers, Fichtner and Brooklyn Martens muscled their way to the hoop, knocking down an assortment of bank shots and short jumpers. Deeper into the quarter, Stitt and Clippers' Madison Beattie found their range from long distance. An evenly played quarter for both teams ended with St. Mary's leading 24-21.

Martens was resolute in her determination to get to the paint, and she repeatedly attacked the rim with good success. Wilde and teammate Ivet Hidalgo made vital contributions to the visitor's cause, while Stitt conducted the flow of the Lightning offense. Clippers' Melissa Ellis flashed her own shot making skills with a series of driving baskets and triples. Behind Martens' aggressive offensive and robust team defense, Briercrest closed the half with a 38-37 edge.

Martens, Fichtner, and Clippers' Dori Sunderland opened the third quarter in attack mode. On defense, the Clippers packed the key and made life miserable for St. Mary's. Stitt held her team close as she made a horde of free throws. With Fichtner and Martens commanding the defensive boards and Sunderland racing the floor on offense, the Clippers' lead swelled to as many as seven. However, the Clippers suffered a stretch of offensive malaise, and after Wilde splashed a three, the hosts could only boast a 54-52 edge.

Although Sunderland continued to push the fast break for Briercrest, the team fell prey to defensive lapses. Meanwhile, Stitt carved up the Clippers' interior defense, Hidalgo contributed timely scoring, and Wilde commanded the defensive boards, allowing St. Mary's to replicate Friday's come-from-behind win, 79-70.

Player of the Game for STMU was Maitlynn Wilde. Briercrest's Dori Sunderland starred for her squad. Lightning guard Andria Stitt once again led the scoring parade for both teams, while Clippers' forward Brooklyn Martens notched a double-double in a losing cause.
