Lightning Flash Late Offense to Dominate Clippers

Written by Jeff Misener

The Briercrest Clippers faced the St. Mary's University Lightning (STMU) on Friday night in women's basketball action. The Clippers are one game ahead of STMU in the win column in the ACAC South standings, but the visitors hold three games in hand. The game was a match-up of three top-ten scorers in the ACAC - STMU's Maitlynn Wilde and Jazmyn Kellogg and Briercrest's Amber Fichtner.

Both squads opened the proceedings with crisp offense and stingy defense. The Clippers' Fichtner and Brooklyn Martens splashed a trio of jumpers to give the Clippers an 11-7 lead, but the Lightning responded with cool confidence. On a drive to the basket, Lightning guard Kellogg sustained a leg injury and hobbled to the bench. At the quarter's conclusion, the teams were tied at 15-15.

Maitlynn Wilde and Andria Stitt carried the offense for STMU in the second stanza as the visitors repeatedly probed the paint and dished to open teammates. Martens, Fichtner, Dori Sunderland, and Melissa Ellis featured on offense for the hosts, with Wilde and Stitt directing the flow for STMU. At halftime, the Calgary school enjoyed a 33-32 lead.

Out of the break, Stitt knocked down some bombs from outside, but Fichtner, Sunderland, and Ellis nullified her efforts. The score remained close as Stitt and Ellis traded threes. St. Mary's ended the quarter with a 55-52.

In the final period, St. Mary's quickly raced ahead as Hidalgo and Stitt commanded the offense. A three from Martens briefly stalled the STMU flurry before Stitt went into beast mode, powering the visitors to a 15-point bulge. With the damage done, the visitors calmly cruised to a convincing 79-58 victory.

STMU guard Andria Stitt, who willed her team to victory and was especially dynamic in the second half, notched 33 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals, meriting Player of the Game recognition. Briercrest forward Amber Fichtner dropped a 20-point, 13 rebound double-double, earning the award for her team. Lightning forward Maitlynn Wilde enjoyed a strong game, recording 19 points and 13 boards, as did Clippers' Brooklyn Martens (15 points, 8 rebounds).
