Huskies storm back to stun Broncos

Kayla Lutterodt's three-pointer with 3.6 seconds left completed a stunning comeback for the Keyano College Huskies, who put together a 7-0 run in the final 45 seconds to defeat the Olds College Broncos 66-65 at the Ralph Klein Centre on Saturday.

Lutterodt's three capped an 11-point fourth quarter, giving her a team-high 19 points for the CCAA's sixth-ranked Keyano side (7-1), while also adding five rebounds. Meanwhile, Maya Besic turned in a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds to go with three steals, Kaylynn Tucker added 13 points, four assists and four rebounds, and Zera Lynn Panesa chipped in with 10 points and three rebounds off the bench.

For the Broncos (3-5), Makayla Rose led all scorers with 20 points to go with three rebounds, while Rio Yamazaki posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds while also adding five assists. Caitlin Paul and Tray-Lyn Fox each had 10 for Olds College, with the latter doing so from the bench.

Points were particularly hard to come by in the opening quarter as both teams played tight defensively, with the Huskies edging out a 13-12 lead after 10 minutes of play. The second quarter was contested in a equally tight manner, though the Broncos made up the deficit to take a 31-29 lead into halftime.

Olds College got out to a quick start in the third quarter, posting a 6-0 run in the opening 1:08 to go up 37-29, only for the Huskies to bring it right back a couple minutes later. After back-to-back threes from Panesa and Lutterodt put Keyano up 46-45, the Broncos fought back to take a 49-48 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Broncos had all the momentum early in the fourth, building the lead out to 59-51 with 4:55 to play, and maintaining the lead through to 65-59 with 1:55 to go. However, the Huskies found another gear after coach Dwayne Vigilance called his final timeout, with a Besic basket cutting the lead to four before Panesa shifted momentum with a steal and uncontested layup with 26 seconds remaining to set the stage for Lutterodt.

Both teams will complete the first half of the season on the road, with Keyano heading to Edmonton for a doubleheader with NAIT and Olds College heading south for a pair with Medicine Hat.
