Broncos battle back to _____ Rustlers
The Olds College Broncos locked down when they needed it the most, taking charge in the final minute to take a 77-72 victory over the Lakeland College Rustlers at Ralph Klein Centre on Friday.
Odett Schlegl led all scorers with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Blu Rose added 20 points, six rebounds and four steals for the Broncos (3-4). Caitlin Paul earned Player of the Game honours with 16 points and four rebounds, while Meghan Swartz scored nine of her 12 points in the fourth quarter.
For Lakeland (2-5), Abigail Whitehead led the way with 16 points on an efficient 7-of-9 from the floor, to go along with six rebounds. Susan Ayaa was a spark plug off the bench with 15 points and four rebounds, while Alana Olson added 14 points an eight rebounds.
Olds College charged out of the gates with an early 9-0 run spanning 1:21, which they then built upon to take a 23-12 lead, with Schlegl accounting for 10 points in the frame.
The Broncos extended their lead to 20 in the early moments of the second quarter, only for the Rustlers to start their climb back into the game with a late 10-0 run punctuated by consecutive threes from Ayaa and Annika Timmerman to close the gap to 39-29 going into halftime.
Olson then put together a dominant third quarter for the Rustlers with 10 points, and Lakeland completed the comeback to take a 53-52 lead heading into the fourth quarter, where the Broncos retook the lead and stretched it two possessions, only for Lakeland to again come back and take a 72-69 lead with 1:23 remaining.
However, the Broncos put the clamps on defensively with an 8-0 run to end it, with a game-tying three Schlegl coming a few seconds later, then Paul giving the Broncos the lead for good with 15 seconds to go before Rose came up with a steal in the dying seconds.
The Broncos will look to complete a perfect home weekend tomorrow as they welcome the Keyano College Huskies for a 6 p.m. tip-off, while Lakeland will head an hour north to take on the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens, also set for a 6 p.m. start.
