Concordia Ekes Out Slim Victory Over Briercrest

The Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder (2-0) arrived in Caronport, SK for a North/South division game against the Briercrest Clippers (2-2) in women's basketball action. Both teams opened the game with designs on making it a track meet. Briercrest took an early lead, highlighted by Dori Sunderland's long three. 5th year guard Kaelyn Bryks ordered the offense for CUE with her drives and passing. The Clippers got to the hoop with regularity but struggled to convert their chances. Late in the quarter, CUE guard Jenna Rinsky converted a rare five-point play, giving the visitors a 19-13 edge.

Second-chance opportunities were scant at both ends, but there was plenty of spectacular play in the second frame. Sunderland banked an uncontested layup before Rinsky replied for CUE. Briercrest guard Melissa Ellis dropped a sublime bank shot off a series of crafty moves to make it a one possession game, but Kourtney Oss and Rachel Harvey tallied to give the visitors a ninepoint bulge. After Jasmine Repetski splashed a triple for Briercrest, CUE's Madison Murdoch and Rachel Harvey answered. At the half, Concordia held a 38-29 lead.

CUE scored four quick points after halftime, but Sunderland stole the ball and assisted on Eve Duerksen's score. Both teams featured trapping defense in the quarter and Concordia's forwards started to dominate the glass. Clippers' Hannah Matuszewski scored off a trap and steal, and Sunderland hit another triple and some free throws to end the quarter, with Briercrest down 50-44.

When Bryks swished a three and Harvey converted off an offensive board, the Clippers extended their trapping defense. Ellis, Fichtner, and Madison Beattie worked to slice the CUE lead to one, but down the stretch it was CUE's Kaelyn Bryks who took over, hitting four free throws and blocking a potential game-tying three to give the game to Concordia, 61-58.

Player of the game for CUE was second year guard Jenna Rinsky, who led her team with 13 points, while the Clippers' Dori Sunderland received the honour on the strength of 12 points. Double doubles were had by Thunder forward Rachel Harvey (12 points, 14 rebounds) and Clippers' Amber Fichtner (11 points, 10 boards)
