Women's Basketball Huskies top Rustlers in home opener

The Keyano Huskies Women's Basketball team topped the number one team in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association's (CCAA) National Rankings Friday night in their home opener, dispatching of the Lakeland Rustlers by a 66-50 score.

The Rustlers trailed by a mere five points after the first quarter, but a 16-9 second quarter in favour of the Huskies made the game a double-digit advantage for the home side at the half.

While the Rustlers challenged in the second half, the Huskies won each of the third and fourth quarters, winning by their eventual 16-point margin.

Joy Victor made her impact felt with 17 points, which was tied for the team scoring lead with Kaylynn Tucker, who came off the bench to earn her points.

Bethany Montebon was the lone Rustler to reach double digits on the day, scoring 11. Veda Gottselig earned Player of the Game honours for the Rustlers.

The two sides meet in a rematch on Saturday, October 29 at 1:00 p.m. at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre.
