Eagles upset Vikings
CAMROSE, AB - Upsetting the home side in the ACAC North Division Quarterfinal, the King's University eagles down the Augustana Vikings, 61-52 in a win or go home game Friday night at Augustana Gym.
The win send the Eagles through to the semi final on Sunday against the Lakeland Rustlers who are the league leaders and went 16-0 during the regular season. Meanwhile, the Vikings season will come to an end with the loss.
In the other North Division Quarterfinal, the NAIT Ooks advance past the Concordia Thunder, 80-60 and will travel to Fort MacMurray to take on the Keyano Huskies Sunday afternoon.
Leading the Eagles to victory was Gaddiel ka Tshiunza and Aneilla Ayotte both with 14 points. ka Tahiunza added 15 rebounds to her stats, 12 of which came on the defensive end.
The Viking's success came from guards Tegan Mackinnon with 11 points and Alyssa Banez with 10. Leading the team in rebounds was Lauren Cardinal with nine.
Struggling to generate any offence from the start, the Vikings were held to just six points in the opening 10 minutes, while the Eagles had 11, eight of which came from the night's leaders Aynotte and ka Tahiunzal.
Flipping the script in the second frame, the Eagles found themselves adding only seven points to the board as the home side took the lead into halftime, 19-18.
Continuing to keep the game within only a couple of points, both teams entered the final and deciding quarter with just a single point difference, 40-39 Eagles.
Having more gas in the tank to fire for a full forty minutes, the Eagles explored with offence to take the win and extend their season, 61-52. After being held to zero buckets in the third, ka Tahiunza drained eight points to help her team to the win.
The Eagle will travel to Lakeland on Sunday for the North Division Semi Final, tip-off is scheduled for 6pm. Catch all the action on ACACtv.
