Rustlers remain perfect on the season

CAMROSE, AB - In a close match-up, the Lakeland Rustlers remain perfect on the season as they defeat the Augustana Vikings 74-65, Friday night at Augustana Gym.

With the win, the Rustlers keep their perfect season intact with 13 straight wins and being the only team in the league to have zero losses to their 2021-22 season record. The win also secures an uncontested hold on first place in the north, meaning they will receive a bye past the quarterfinal round of playoffs.

Meanwhile, the Vikings struggles down the final stretch of the regular season continue with their third straight loss. However, they hold onto third place in the north with three games remaining.

Leading the way to victory was fourth-year guard Hailey Somers with 17 points and six rebounds. Across the court, fourth-year forward Lauren Cardinal had 19 points, five rebounds and 2 assists fort he Vikings.

Starting the game off close, the Vikings and their visitors battled it out, with the league leaders coming out of the first frame with a the lead, 21-15.

Keeping the Rustlers on their heels, the Vikings stayed neck and neck to tie the second quarter in scoring with 25 points aside and keep the score close with the Rustlers six point lead being the only difference heading into halftime.

The third quarter proved to be a defensive battle, as the quarters scoring remained low. However, the Rustlers remained on top, winning the quarter 16-8 and expanding their lead to 14 points, 61-48 heading into the fourth and final quarter.

Not backing down, the Rustlers kept rolling, showing why they are the top team in the league, but the Vikings fought back to win the quarter 17-12. However, their effort would be to little to late as the their guest walk away with the win, 74-75.

Looking ahead, the Rustlers will take on the NAIT Ooks tomorrow night, while the vikings will head north to the NWP Wolves den on Sunday afternoon. Catch all the action on ACACtv.
