Women's Basketball Huskies oust Ooks

The Keyano Huskies pulled off a rare shutout in the first quarter en route to a 67-47 win against the visiting NAIT Ooks at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre Saturday in Fort McMurray, Alta.

"We just weren't clean; we didn't finish the game," said Head Coach Dwayne Vigilance of his team's performance. "That leaves a bitter taste in your mouth, but at the same time, it's a learning experience for us.

"We need to learn to finish games and that's why we play games in the league."

Opening the game with a 21-0 first quarter, the Huskies held a 38-13 advantage at the half. After building that lead up to a 57-26 game through three quarters, the Ooks responded with a strong 21-point final quarter to cut into the Huskies' final lead.

"We were too comfortable," continued Vigilance. "It wasn't an urgent situation as it was in the first quarter. Again, it's one of those things we have to learn as a young team.

"I think we just got lucky."

Kiana Mintz and Marijana Besic led the Huskies with 19 and 15 points, respectively. Moiyan Toure added eight points while Kayla Lutterodt and Danielle MacLellan each had seven points off the bench.

"I think we opened the game pretty well and we played good in first half, but then second half we went down," said Besic, who was named Player of the Game for the Huskies.

A trio of Ooks tied for their team lead as Lucy Wilde, Katherine McDougall, and Margreat Idi each had 10 points on the day. Toure led both sides with 15 rebounds in the contest.

The Huskies shot 48.1 per cent from the field on 25-of-52 shooting. That included six of 15 three-points shots made. On their 17 trips to the foul line, they made 11 of those opportunities.

Countering were the Ooks, who shot 43.2 per cent from the field on 19 of 44 shooting. They made good on six of the 19 three-point shots they tossed up. They went three-for-12 from the foul line.

Lucy Wilde was named the Player of the Game for the Ooks.

The two sides will face each other Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. to close out the weekend double header.
