Senior Night win for St. Mary's University

Last home game for the St. Mary's University Women. Playing an opponent who they hadn't played since the 1st semester. Lady Lightning had to split their weekend series to clinch a post season berth in Fort McMurray later this month.

Olds College women who have been ranked all season in the CCAA top 10 played on a short bench with Macyn Morning -Bull coming down with lower body injury. Bronco Women had to rely on their star player Brittany Thibeaux and Kristina Bajovic. They had to match up with the scoring trio of St. Mary's Emily Wagner, Hannah Helton and graduatiing senior Sydney Deighton.

Olds College Broncos came out strong in the 1st quarter with a 23-14 lead. Thibeaux had poured in 10 of their 23 points. Alli Taylor was controlling the boards and making fast break plays to Thibeaux and Bajovic. Lightning had 1st quarter scoring from Kennedy Burgess (5 points) and Wagner (7 points).

2nd quarter was a win for the Lightning. They had solved the offence scoring and out scored the 26-5. They held Thibeaux and Bajovic to no points in the quarter. Their 26 point quarter was buoyed by Wagner's 13 points which included 4- 3 pointers from the arc. Half time score 40-28.

3rd quarter was flipped in Broncos favor. They came out with a vengence and outscored them by 16 points In this quarter Broncos had shut down Wagner and Thibeaux had taken control under the boards with 13 points. Olds College had a lead 52-45 after 3 quarters of play.

It was this pivotal 4th quarter where both teams had equal opportunities. Thibeaux had scored 11 points and Wagner contributed 6 points with Hannah Helton with 8 points. It came down to free throws for the Broncos at the end and missed two in dying moments. The game had ended in favor of the Lightning and won by one point. Final score 70-69

Both teams now qualify for the final 8 at the ACAC Women's Basketball Championships in Fort McMurray hosted by Keyano College.

Olds College (14-4) and St. Mary's University (13-6) continue their weekend series at the Ralph Klein Centre on February 16th. Game time 6pm.
