Broncos quiet Queens; Harrison reaches significant milestone

OLDS, Alta. - The Olds College Broncos made it a special night at the Ralph Klein Centre on Friday, as they defeated the Red Deer College Queens 82-67.

The victory was significant in that it put Broncos head coach Avery Harrison in rarefied air, as he joined a very select group of coaches with 500 victories in ACAC competition.

On the court, Michaela Allen-Gullion put up a career-high 32 points to earn player of the game honours for the Broncos (13-3), while Brittany Thibeaux posted 26 points and 13 rebounds in three quarters for Olds College, who jumped into second place in the ACAC South with two games in hand over first-place Medicine Hat College.

The matchup tested the Broncos' depth, as they were without both Kyla Adams and Kristina Bajovic due to injury.

Harneet Sidhu led the offensive charge for the Queens (2-15) with 15 points to go with five assists, four rebounds and four steals, while Samantha Wade added 12 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Lauren Cardinal (nine points, three rebounds) was named player of the game for the Queens.

The two sides started out trading baskets for the majority of the opening quarter, with Olds College calling a timeout with a 13-11 lead and 4:04 to play.

From there, the Broncos did not allow a field goal in a 7:43 span between the first and second quarters to stretch their lead to double digits, with a 22-13 first quarter lead extending to 47-32 going into halftime.

Olds College extended its lead as far as 26 midway through the third quarter, punctuated by a Thibeaux three-pointer. However, the Queens began a comeback late in the frame, cutting the Broncos lead to 68-51 through three quarters, though it was not enough.

The Broncos and Queens will complete the home-and-home series at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer on Saturday at 6 p.m.
