Ambrose Lions Beat Defending ACAC Champions

Ambrose Lions Beat Defending ACAC Champions

Saturday night saw local Calgary University, St. Mary's, come challenge the Lions. There are lots of recent touch points between the two schools as head coach Gerard Brand coached at St. Mary's last year. Starter Kariya Bruised Head also made the transferred from the 2018 ACAC Champions.

Tonight was an extremely tight game from start to finish. Never did a team hold a double digit lead. While most of the teams stats were very similar as well, Ambrose did see an advantage in rebounding, outrebounding the Lightning 55-34. Turnovers help keep the Lightning in the games as they only had 14 turnovers to the Lions 23.

From the tipoff, Emily Wagner controlled the game for St. Mary's, shooting 8-20, good for 22 points while picking up 7 rebounds and 2 assists (good enough for Player of the Game recognition). For the Lions Caitlyn Hetrick, Kariya Bruised Head and Catarina Dimonekene lead the offense scoring 16, 17 & 14 points respectively.

With 2 minutes left in the game, the score was back tied 55-55, however down the stretch the Lightning would go scoreless thanks to strong defensive play by the Lions. A Dimonekene jump shot sealed the victory as with 30 seconds left, the Lions were up by 5. The score would end 61-55 for the Lions. Kariya Bruised Head would receive the Player of the Game award for the Lions as she played extremely well against her former team.
