Kings power past Huskies to return to championship final

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings will get the opportunity to win their third-straight Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Championship in Men's Volleyball Saturday night following a semi-final victory Friday night at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre in Fort McMurray, Alta.

The Kings swept the host Keyano Huskies 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 26-24) to earn their spot in the final at the 2023 ACAC Men's Volleyball Championship Presented by Elite Promotional Marketing.

Noah Carlson led his side with 10 kills while Jonathan Graham had 11 digs to lead all players on both sides of the court. The Huskies held with the Kings for moments of the first set, but the Kings were able to string together some quick points, transitioning well off serve receive to set up their attackers.

"We set that goal at the start of the year," RDP Kings Head Coach Aaron Schulha said. "With the group that we have, anything less than that goal would be a disappointment.

"We knew that we'd be in tough today for sure against a very solid Keyano team. We did a lot of talking today about embracing the opportunity and making sure that it's going to be loud, it's going to be against ya, but mature teams and teams that go on to win big things make sure that they look after it in that moment. It was our most mature business-like performance of the year."

Trey Weinmeier and Radek Brzozowski led the Huskies' attack with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Nikola Sreckovic added 31 assists. Weinmeier and Brzozowski also led the home side Huskies with seven and six digs, respectively.

João Cunha also added nine kills and four digs in the loss.

"It took a whole team effort and all 16 guys were just amazing tonight," said Colby Nemeth of the Kings. "Ever since last night's game, everybody did everything possible to be prepared for this game."

The Kings will now advance to take on the Briercrest Clippers in the Championship Final tomorrow at 8:00 p.m. The Huskies will face the Ooks in the Bronze Medal Match at 6:00 p.m.

Weinmeier of the Huskies and Nemeth of the Kings were named Players of the Game for their respective sides.
