The Kings stay atop of the South Division with three set victory

Red Deer, January 28, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic continued their dominance over ACAC competition as they were able to sweep the Trojans for the second night in a row.

It was a great start defensively for both teams as each side sent a player diving on the hardwood to keep the ball up. One of those players was local native Brett Lower, who crashed into the score table to save a ball and keep his team in the rally. On top of all this, the Trojans sure were closing their blocks as they stuffed the Kings hitters a few times in the early moments of the opening set. Later on in the opening set, the Trojans managed to crawl back into it and tie it at 21. RDP still managed to take the first set 25-23 after a huge block from Lower on the right side.

A huge double block by the Trojans sent their bench into a frenzy as they were able to tie the setup at 11 and was a huge turning point for the team from Calgary as this kept the team within striking distance of the Kings. But a few great services by outside-hitter Colby Nemeth (Bachelor of Commerce) put the Trojans off their game, and the Kings regained their lead. Even though they lost the point, setter Maddux Greves (Business Administration) made a diving kick save near the end line to keep his team in the rally, momentarily. But it was the Kings who walked away with a 25-19 win in the second set.

And the traditional Kings Volleyball came out in the third set as they came out fast and at one point were leading the Trojans 17-7. Near the end of the set when the Kings made a few substitutions to get some players on the bench some game time, the Trojans managed to get into double digits but would fall by 10 in the third set with a final score 25-15. Outside-hitter Dante Furlan gave his team the set and match point after he mishit the kill but managed to catch some fingertips of a SAIT player.

The Trojans player of the game was outside-hitter Ryan Zachary (Primary Care Paramedic) as he had nine kills and four digs on the night. For the Kings, outside-hitter Colby Nemeth was awarded the honour with nine kills, six service aces and four digs.

The Kings will be away next Friday in Olds to take on the Broncos with an 8 pm start time before rematching Olds College the following day at home. For the Trojans, they will play host to the Briercrest College Clippers at 8 pm in Calgary for a two-game set.
