Briercrest Wins Battle For First Against Red Deer

Briercrest Men's Volleyball hosted the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings in a Saturday afternoon matchup in Caronport, Sk. This game was especially important to both sides, as they were neck and neck for the top spot in their division. So, it was set to be an exciting battle, and it did not disappoint.  

Red deer got up 4-0 early in the first set, Briercrest answered, tying up the score at 4. The back and forth continued, seeing scores tied up at 8 and 10. Red Deer pulled away slightly, getting up to a 16-11 lead resulting in a Briercrest timeout. Out of the break, the Kings kept their lead, now at 19-14 which saw another Clippers timeout. Red Deer would go on to take the 1st set by a  score of 25-19. 

To open the second, the Clippers lead early, by a slight margin of 6-4. The teams traded big kills,  blocks, digs, and went back and forth throughout the middle of the set, now tied at 17. The atmosphere in the gymnasium picked up with excitement. The set would go to extra points and see both teams continue to fend offset points and produce several thrilling rallies. Briercrest finally finished it off, edging out Red Deer to win the second set 34-32. 

Briercrest looked to build off their momentum from the last set and use the pumped-up home crowd to their advantage. It worked well for them, seeing 11-7 clippers lead with their solid hitting continuing. Briercrest pushed the play and got up 17-12, which saw Red Deer call a  timeout to regroup. It went to 22-16 out of the timeout, which saw a second timeout of the set called by Red Deer. Briercrest won the third set by a score of 25-19. 

In the fourth set, Briercrest got up 6-4 early. Red Deer answered, overtaking Briercrest, ahead 9- 7 now. The game then saw itself tied at 12, with solid play at both ends on both sides of the ball.  The Clippers got a small lead 14-12, leading to a Kings timeout. Out of the break, the teams became tied at 18, then the Clippers got ahead 21-18, leading to a Kings timeout. The Clippers took the final set by a score of 25-18 and today's matchup 3 sets to 1.
