Men's volleyball Huskies complete weekend sweep of Rustlers

The Keyano Huskies men's volleyball team surged to another victory over the Lakeland Rustlers Saturday at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre, earning their weekend sweep in a four-set (20-25, 25-14, 25-23, 25-23) game.

"It feels really good," said head coach Keegan Kuhr. "We needed everybody today and we grinded through it and I'm happy that we were able to get back to .500."

The first set in Saturday's match went like it did in Friday's five-set victory as the Rustlers scored a 25-20 win to open the game.

However, the Huskies had the energy and resolve to take the second set by a 25-14 score followed by back-to-back 25-23 sets that went the way of the home side.

"I just want to say thank you for all the fans that supported us during this weekend," said Athus Silva, named Saturday's player of the game. "Friday we start a little slow and lost the first two sets. The entire team was very together, giving everything.

"The guys coming from the bench did an amazing job. Now we have two wins."

Silva recorded nine kills, three service aces, and had a single block.

"He was focused, he was consistent, he did what we needed him to do," said Kuhr of Silva's play "I think he knows that when he's hoorahing a little bit more, we feed off that, including myself."

Trey Weinmeier led the Huskies with 15 kills, Anderson King had a team-high 11 digs, and Preston Yole was credited with six blocks.

Travis Walls continued to make an impact on the outside with 11 kills, four digs, and a pair of blocks.

Silva himself noticed a positive improvement from the team's opening weekend as he played more of an integral role in keeping the Huskies ahead.

"This weekend I was pretty good offensively," continued Silva. "I did a lot of kills, helping the team. My serve too, the past weekend when we play against King's my serve was struggling a little bit.

"This weekend, I got the consistency after getting some reps during the week and I was more confident to help my team."

The Huskies return to action next weekend with their first road trip of the season. They'll head west to take on the Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves.

The Huskies and Wolves will meet Friday at 6:00 p.m. followed by a Saturday rematch at 1:00 p.m.
