MVB | Kodiaks Sweep the Broncos at Home

MVB | Kodiaks Sweep the Broncos at Home

Jan. 18, 2020 - The Kodiaks were back in home action prepared to defeat the Olds College Broncos for the second time this weekend.

The Kodiaks looked to continue and extend their two-game winning streak.  The Kodiaks stand in second place of the South Division just a few points behind the Sait Trojans.

The Kodiaks started set one a bit slower than usual, finding themselves three points down. However, the Broncos did not hold back whatsoever. Bronco's Matheus Franca had a strong set with six kills and a block. The Kodiaks regrouped with a couple of kills from Michael Hummel and Carter Hansen. However, the Kodiaks fell short as the determined Broncos took the first set of the game with a score of 25-19.

The Kodiaks were clearly not happy about letting down the first set, as they took an early six-point lead to force a Broncos timeout.  The Kodiaks were determined to bounce back and tie the game. Carter Hansen, Michael Hummel, and Zach Wikenheiser made the difference this set as Carter finished the set with eight kills, Mike with three with all kills mostly assisted from Zach. The Kodiaks did not look back as their strong performance paid off with a 25-18 win in set two.

The Broncos would match the same intensity as the Kodiaks. Set three started off back and forth. Carter Hansen came up big with two straight kills as the Kodiaks opened up a five-point gap. The game started to escalate as both teams started getting a bit chippy and received warnings for both benches.

On the other hand, the Kodiaks kept great momentum but the Broncos did not want to go away. The set was balanced between the two opponents but the Broncos were able to match the score 14-14 with a strong set performance from Matheus Franca having 5 kills. Kodiaks Nolan Moes gave the Kodiaks some extra motivation as he had three blocks in the set. The Kodiaks kept their composure and opened up a lead that eventually led to a set three win 25-17.

The Kodiaks and Broncos came out firing in the fourth set as they battled point for point. Coach Gibos would eventually call a timeout having a two-point lead.  Matheus Franca was outstanding for the Broncos with twelve kills at this point. From there on, the set remained balanced between both teams. Nolan Moes and Michael Hummel excelled for the Kodiaks for the rest of the set with a couple of kills each. The Kodiaks kept composure and took the set 25-19 to win the game.

It was an entertaining game, to say the least, Matheus Franca of Olds found himself with fifteen kills and eight digs while Carter Hansen of Lethbridge managed to earn fifteen kills and three blocks.

Lethbridge will host the Ambrose Lions on January 30th as they look to continue their win streak.
