Lions Unable to Upset Kings

Lions Unable to Upset Kings

Coming off of a strong performance last weekend, beating Medicine Hat 3 sets to 1, the Lions looked to carry their momentum into Friday night's game at home. While the Lion's kept the first set close, Red Deer served tough and eliminated their errors, which proved to be too much for the Lion's to handle. The first set of the Men's game between the Ambrose Lions and visiting Red Deer College Kings was well paced with the score tight the duration of the game and a win for the Kings 25-22.  A few service aces from #12, Jonathan Graham, in the late stages of the first set helped contribute to a first set win for the Kings.

In the second set, the Kings took their play to another level, serving well as well as eliminating attacking errors and other unforced errors. Graham again led the Kings in the second set, recording 4 out of the teams 7 kills and two aces. To try to regain some of the momentum, Ambrose brought in second year setter Aiden McMillan, however, the Kings were too far ahead for the Lions to comeback. Unfortunately for the Lions, the third set saw the Kings momentum carry through into the third.  The Lions struggled passing to start the third set, which resulted in them being down 5-1 before a timeout would be called by head coach Paul Armbruster. In the end, the Lions weren't able to overcome the slow start as, even though they played right with Red Deer through the remainder of the third set, this deficit ultimately cost them.

After the game, Armbruster commented on his teams performance saying, "We need to continue to work in practice to find a level of consistency in our game. We had some great moments tonight where we played really well but we also made too many errors that cost us the game." Players of the game were #12 Jonathan Graham (RDC Kings) and #12 Carter McMillan (Ambrose Lions).
