OLDS, Alta. - The Olds College Broncos put up a good fight, but they ultimately fell in four sets to the Red Deer College Kings at the Ralph Klein Centre on Sunday.
For the Kings (12-4), Regan Fathers put up a strong performance, leading all attackers with 13 kills to go with seven digs, while Kings captain Ben Holmes posted 12 kills, four digs, and two blocks, and Jayden Fathers also posted double-digit kill totals with 10.
Thundersky Walkingbear led the attack for the Broncos (0-16), finishing with 11 kills to go with eight digs and two service aces, while Olds College captain Jesse Stoddart finished with seven kills and 16 digs. Braden Bates also put up a strong all-around match for Olds College with four solo blocks, three kills, and two service aces.
The Kings jumped ahead early in the first set, and they kept pushing forward en route to a 25-16 victory in the opener.
Olds College showed some fight in the second set, pushing back against the Kings before Red Deer ultimately finished off a 25-23 victory to go up two sets to none.
The Broncos fought back in the third set, with a much cleaner attack leading to a 25-20 victory to force a fourth set.
However, Olds College was able to repeat their comeback from Saturday night, as the Kings came from behind to polish off a 25-18 victory in the fourth.
Jayden Fathers was the player of the game for Red Deer, while setter Mason Muller took the award for the Broncos.
The Broncos have a bye next week before taking the court at home against the Ambrose University Lions on Friday, January 25 at 8 p.m., one of Olds College's Make Some Noise for Mental Health games.
Meanwhile, the Queens are back on the court Friday, as they host the Briercrest College Clippers at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre at 8 p.m.
