Kings outpace Broncos

OLDS, Alta. - The Red Deer College Kings hit their stride at the Ralph Klein Centre on Thursday, dispatching the Olds College Broncos in straight sets.

Ben Holmes turned in a strong performance for the Kings (5-4), finishing with 10 kills and 10 digs, while Mark DeWit added eight kills and eight solo blocks.

Thundersky Walkingbear had 10 kills and six digs to pace the Broncos (0-7), while Jesse Stoddart added six kills and four digs of his own.

The first set was tightly contested, as the Broncos clawed back any time the Kings tried to get too far ahead. However, Red Deer proved too strong, taking the opening set 25-22.

The Kings found their form midway through the second set, pulling ahead and seeing it through for a 25-20 win to go up two sets to none.

Red Deer put its foot on the gas in the third set, jumping out to an early lead and never relinquishing it, wrapping up the match with a convincing 25-13 win.

Jayden Fathers was the player of the game for the Kings after posting five kills, six digs, three aces and two solo blocks, while Davis Clarke earned the award for the Broncos after a 16-dig performance.

The Broncos and Kings will play again at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer on Friday at 8 p.m.
