Trojans knock back Clippers

CALGARY, ALTA., (Oct. 12, 2018) — The SAIT Trojans men's volleyball team opened their weekend with a victory Friday night.

The Trojans played hosts to the Briercrest College Clippers, and beat their guests 3-1 (25-16, 25-19, 25-27, 25-19) in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game played at SAIT's Campus Centre.

"I don't know if they played their best ball in the first two sets, but the third and fourth they played the way we expected them to," said Trojans head coach Sean McKay. "They were a much better team in the last two, and that seemed to catch us off guard, and it took us a little while to adjust to."

SAIT moves to 2-0 on the season, while the Clippers drop to 0-1.

The Trojans came into the game a little blind, as McKay admitted his team had no tape on their opponents. With Friday's game behind them, they can now focus on Saturday's 3pm showdown knowing a little more of what they will see.

"Our guys will be better adjusted to their speed of offense," he said. "But also just some blocking schemes. It's really where we're going with our serve and not how hard. They have some tendencies in certain rotations, and we're going to have to capitalize on that."

In the game, SAIT dominated the first two sets, but found it hard to put away Briercrest in the third due to their ability to pass well off the serve.

"We were serving tough, but they passed a great game," McKay stated. "That was able to keep their offense running efficiently."

For the second-straight game, Jarett Noel (2nd year, Calgary, Geographic Information Systems) led the Trojans in kills, as he had 14 to go along with eight digs to be named his team's Player of the Game.

Teammates Mark Anderson (4th year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration) and Tyler Latu'ila (4th year, Auckland, New Zealand, Bachelor of Business Administration) also had big nights, recording 12 and 11 kills, respectively.

Bryton Codd led the Clippers with 14 kills.
