MVB | Kodiaks complete sweep of Briercrest

Feb. 3, 2018 – Call it taking care of business.

Desperately needing a weekend sweep of the Briercrest Clippers to aid their ACAC playoff chances, the Lethbridge College Kodiaks delivered with a huge 3-1 win on Saturday afternoon.

As they did the night before, the Clippers refused to make it easy. It was a continuing trend for the Kodiaks to build an early lead, only to watch Briercrest storm back late in a set.

The teams traded the first two sets with identical 25-23 scores. With the first set tied at 23, the Kodiaks won an insane rally that featured a pancake, six returns and two desperations saves from the Lethbridge side. The Kodiaks proceeded to win the set when the Clippers wmisplayed a Kodiaks serve.

Carter Hansen came out strong with eight kills and two digs in the opening set, while Taylor Klassen had five kills for to open for Briercrest.

Neither team could find separation in set two, but Briercrest rallied late for a 25-23 win.

Lethbridge struggled out of the gate in set three, going down 5-2 before rallying for seven of the next ten points to grab a 9-5 lead and force Briercrest into a timeout.

The Kodiaks then let Briercrest back into the game, but rallied for eight of the last eleven points to take a 25-18 win.

Like they did yesterday, the Kodiaks seized the final game with a dominating final set. The Kodiaks jumped out to a 12-6 lead and never looked back, aided by the strong net play of Carter Hanson and a medley of remarkable plays from Matt Primrose. Lethbridge finished the set 25-15 to take the match.

Primrose was all over the court and wowed the crowd with some amazing gets. He was named player of the game for an effort that included ten digs.

The duo of Hansen and Dax Whitehead gave Briercrest fits all game long, striking for 19 and 18 respectively. Whitehead added 14 digs, while Zach Wikenheiser had 46 assists at setter.

Javier Alverez was named player of the game for Briercrest after delivering 12 kills and seven digs, as well as four service aces. Levi Olsen had 14 kills while Klassen finished the game with 17 kills and a team-high three blocks.

Both teams are now fighting with Red Deer for the final two playoff spots in the ACAC south division. Lethbridge (13-7) moves to within two points of Briercrest (14-8) but has two games in hand. Red Deer (11-9), who were idle this weekend, remains in the mix and trails Lethbridge by four points.

The Clippers will now have a bye week before hosting Ambrose in their final weekend of regular season play. The Kodiaks remain in fourth place in the division and will host SAIT in a crucial home-and-home next weekend, before finishing the regular season with a weekend series against Olds on Feb. 16 and 17.
