MVB | Kodiaks Take South Division Leaders to Five Sets

October 27, 2017 – The Kodiaks and Kings faced off today in the first of a two game series in Lethbridge this weekend, with the Kodiaks looking to put a dent in the Kings 4-0 record so far this season.

The Kodiaks came out powerful and took control of the set early on. Dax Whitehead and Carter Hansen drilled down a combined seven kills. Kings, Evan Parchomchuk had five kills of his own, but the Kodiaks defense kept the Kings at bay. Matthew Primrose made nine digs while Michael Hummel had two major blocks to give the Kodiaks a 25-16 victory in the first set.

The Kings looked to redeem themselves in the second set with an early lead. The Kodiaks followed close behind but a series of service and attack errors allowed the Kings to maintain their lead for the set to take the 25-20 win and tie up the game 1-1. Kings Evan Parchomchuk had five kills while libero, Chris Petersen, captured seven digs.

Looking to pull ahead in the game, the Kodiaks came out defensively at the net with an early solo block from Carter Hansen. The Kodiaks and Kings alternated control but the Kings came out on top for the set for a 25-23 victory, largely due to the contributions of Scott Irvine with six kills and setter Tom Wass with twelve assists.

The Kings came out strong and stole a heavy lead in the fourth set, but the Kodiaks came back in the end of the set for a suspenseful 26-24 win. Kodiaks Dax Whitehead led the comeback with seven kills and a huge block to tie up the game and head into the fifth set.

The teams rallied point for point but the Kodiaks took the first half of the set with Carter Hansen offense at the net, but the Kings began to find cracks in the Kodiaks defense to get back in the game. King, Justin Lucas drove in three kills while Chris Petersen rallied the offense with three digs to lead the Kings to a 15-12 win in the set and a 3-2 win of the game.

With this win the Kings advance to 5-0 in the season while the Kodiaks fall to 2-3. The two teams are back in action in Lethbridge tomorrow afternoon at 3:00PM, when the Kodiaks will look to steal a win from the Kings.
