The Kings clinch first place in the conference, shutout the Ooks

Red Deer, February 18, 2023 – It was a battle between two teams that needed overtime last night in Edmonton, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and the NAIT Ooks. But this one was far from overtime as the Kings shut out the Ooks 4-0.

The Kings would open the scoring with a goal from forward Erik Miller (Business Administration) out of the slot in the fifth minute of the game with the assist going to forward Jacob Kendall (Bachelor of Education). Miller would one-time the pass from Kendall which ended up trickling slowly through the legs of Ooks goaltender Taryn Kotchorek (Bachelor of Business Administration).

At the end of the period, the Kings were heavily outshooting the Ooks 13-1.

15 minutes into the second period, the Polytechnic would extend their lead to two with a shorthanded goal. Ryland McNinch (Bachelor of Education) one-timed a shot off the end boards from a clearance by Tanner Sklaruk (Open Studies) on the penalty kill into the back of the net.

With less then a minute to go, the Kings would extend their lead to three goals after Miller capitalized for his second of the game. Chase Haygarth (Business Administration) set up Miller on the goal and was awarded the assist.

Heading into the third period, the Kings continued to outshoot the Ooks 28-10.

The scoring picked up a lot quicker in the third period then it did in the second. The Kings scored their fourth goal just under six minutes into the frame. As he was cross-checked to the ice, forward Reegan Doig (Open Studies) was able to release the puck into the back of the net. McNinch would pick up his second point on the night and forward Jaxon Steele (Bachelor of Kinesiology) picked up the second assist on the goal.

With the Ooks down by four, forward Garin Butler (Instrumentation Engineering Technology) picked a fight with Kings forward Jacob Wozney (Bachelor of Education) to try and gain any sort of energy for his team to spark a comeback. Both were awarded five minutes for fighting and a game misconduct.

Goaltender Arik Weersink would pick up a 17-save shutout as his team defeats the Ooks 4-0 and clinch first place in the conference. Weersink was named the player of the game and so was his opposing goaltender Taryn Kotchorek who had a 35-save performance.

The Kings will be back in action at home next week Friday at 7 pm as they take on the Concordia University Thunder. The Ooks will start next weekend on the road in Camrose as they take on the University of Alberta-Augustana at 7 pm on February 24.
