The Kings win back-to-back against the Voyageurs

Red Deer, January 28, 2023 – After facing each other last night, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team looked to sweep the Portage College Voyageurs this afternoon. The Kings defeated the Voyageurs last night with a 6-3 victory.

After going perfect on the powerplay last night, the Kings got an early chance to capitalize on another man advantage, but they could not get a shot on the net.

But moments later, the home team would open the scoring after a beautiful pass by Reegan Doig (Open Studies) set up Ryland McNinch (Bachelor of Education) in front of the net and he would deflect it past Voyageurs goaltender Alex Brousseau.

RDP in the period would go zero for three on the man advantage in the first period but would get another even-strength goal with a back-door tap-in by Dylan Esau (Business Diploma) after receiving a pass from Chase Haygarth (Business Administration).

The Voyageurs would finally get some offensive zone time in the final few minutes of the first period which led to two penalties within 10 seconds of each other, putting them on a two-man advantage going into the second period.

At the end of the first, the Kings outshot Portage nine to five.

The Voyageurs would cut the lead in half with an early powerplay goal as Shaye Sommerfeld scores his second against the Kings in as many games. It was a beautiful goal as he found the far side top corner over the glove of goaltender Arik Weersink (Bachelor of Business Administration). Forward Brody Dale and defenseman Liam Visram both got the assist on the powerplay goal.

Even though there was just one goal in the second period, it was a relatively eventful period with multiple penalties and a couple of goal chances for both sides.

At the end of the second period, the Kings still outshot the Voyageurs 23-10.

The hometown team opened the scoring in the third period with another tip-in goal from McNinch off a one-time shot from defenseman Parker Gavlas (Business Certificate).

With four minutes left to go, forward Jacob Wozney extended the Kings lead on the powerplay. Hayden Clayton sent in the puck to the goal area, where Wozney hacked away until it found the back of the net. Conrad Belcourt got the second assist on the goal.

With this goal, the Kings walked away with a 4-1 victory.

The players of the game went to forward Ryland McNinch with a two-goal performance and Voyageurs Shaye Sommerfeldt with the only goal for his team.

The Kings will be away next weekend in Saskatchewan as they take on the Briercrest College Clippers and the Voyageurs will also be away in Edmonton to take on the NAIT Ooks at 7 pm on Friday.
