TROJANS TOP VOYAGEURS IN FAST-PACED GAME

LAC LA BICHE – The Portage College Voyageurs gave it their all – but in the end, the SAIT Trojans had the horses. In a highly entertaining hockey game at the Bold Center Friday night, the visitors from Calgary blanked the home team 4-0, sending a loud and enthusiastic crowd on Make Noise for Mental Health night home disappointed.

"I thought we played a pretty good game tonight," said Voyageur Head Coach Kevin McClelland. "We had opportunities to score and we just didn't score."

And boy, did they have opportunities, particularly in the first period when they enjoyed an extended five-on-three powerplay after spotting SAIT the first goal of the game. Trojan goalie Boston Bilous provided extra protection in the net, stopping all 19 first-period shots and all 36 in the game.

McClelland was quick to credit his stellar play while also noting that his troops have to find a way to bury their chances.

"Their goaltender played very well…Our powerplay had an opportunity to get us back in the game, especially with a five on three," he said. "We had wide open nets and we were just missing. The opportunities are there and the guys are moving the puck well. You've just got to bury those things."

Brett Trentham led with way for the Trojans, potting two goals, with Zach Cox and McKenzie Welke adding one tally each. Dylan Schives played a strong game for SAIT and was named his squad's Player of the Game. Liam Visram was a force on the blueline for the Voyageurs and was named Portage's Player of the Game.

Heading into the third down only 2-0, the Voyageurs again had a few glorious scoring opportunities but couldn't find the back of the net. Once SAIT scored the third goal, it was curtains for the home team.

"At 2-0, that's when we've got to score and not let them score the third goal and the fourth goal," said McClelland. "That's where we've got to get better."

The good news for the Voyageurs is they have another chance in less than 24 hours to exact a measure of revenge. The two teams go at it again at the Bold Center at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

"Tomorrow's a new day, " said McClelland.
