The Vikings avenge last night's loss with a 5-2 victory over the Kings

Red Deer, January 14, 2022 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team was back in action tonight with a rematch of yesterdays game against the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings that saw the Kings walk away with a 6-2 victory. This was the first time they won in Camrose this season as they lost in their first meeting 4-3. Yesterday's game featured two goals from defenceman Parker Gavlas (Business Certificate), which happened to be his first two goals in the ACAC.

But for the second night in a row, the Vikings would open the scoring with a powerplay goal just seconds into the penalty. Fifth-year Austin Kozluk was able to get his stick on a point shot from defense Tavis Roch to steer it past Kings goaltender Arik Weersink (Bachelor of Business Administration). Rookie Jaxon Georget got the second assist on the goal.

The Kings would storm back to tie it after winning the offensive zone faceoff, the puck was sent in by defence Konrad Belcourt (Bachelor of Kinesiology) from the corner to wide open Hayden Clayton (Open Studies) who chipped it over the Vikings goaltender for his sixth goal on the year. Forward Jacob Wozney (Bachelor of Education) was given the second assist on the goal.

The Vikings would regain their one goal lead after veteran defense Jackson Siemens jumped on a rebound given off by Weersink and fired it into the back of the net. Roch of the Vikings sent in a wrist shot from the point that ultimately gave off the rebound that Siemens jumped on.

Augustana continued to fire shots on Weersink, and they found their insurance goal to go up 3-1. Forward Cameron Shorrock received a pass from his teammate at centre ice before juking out a couple of Kings players and sniping it top corner on the blocker side.

Moments later, the Vikings extended their lead to three with an impressive back door tap in by forward Jack Hamly after Shorrock strung a pass across the blue paint to his teammate. Head Coach Trevor Keeper called a timeout to figure out something to slow down the offence of the Vikings and give goaltender Kristian Lyon (Business Administration General) time to warm up as Weersink was getting pulled.

Minutes later, the Kings finally found the back of the net after an impressive pass from forward Ryland McNinch (Bachelor of Education) found an open Dylan Esau (Business Diploma) in front of the net for a back door tap in for themselves.

An empty net goal by Vikings Colby Wolter sealed the deal for the visiting team and would head back home with a split weekend after a 5-2 victory.

After a 51 save performance, Vikings Goaltender Rett Rook was named the player of the game for his team. For the Kings, forward Chase Haygarth (Business Administration General) was given the honour for his team.

Next week, the Kings will start their weekend in Calgary for a battle with the SAIT Trojans at 7 pm. The Vikings will have a home-and-home series with the Portage College Voyageurs starting on Friday at 7 pm in Camrose.
