Red Deer, AB – The Briercrest College Clippers struck first in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Men's Hockey quarter-finals.
Tied 1-1 entering the third period, the visitors scored four times in the third period to pick up a 5-1 road win over the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings.
Briercrest College hit the scoreboard four minutes into the first period.
Trey Doell carried the puck around a defender and beat Kings goaltender Arik Weersink on the blocker side.
The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) leading scorer during the regular season responded for the Kings at 13:23 of the second period.
Jacob Kendall, who was also named the North Star Sports Kings Player of the Game, picked up his own rebound in the slot and found room behind Dominik Tmej on the backhand to even the contest.
Five minutes into the third period, the Clippers took a one goal edge on the power play. Cole Stevenson was stationed on the side of the net and redirected a point shot into the back of the net.
About two minutes later, the visitors went up a pair. From the slot, Colton Aikens beat Weersink high on the glove side.
With 2:34 remaining and Weersink on the bench, Curtis Wiebe hit the open cage. Zachary Anderson tacked on a power play goal with time expiring and Briercest captured game one.
The Kings went one-for-six on the power play. The Clippers converted twice on four opportunities.
Clippers Player of the Game Tmej made 30 saves.
Weersink turned aside 22 shots.
On Saturday, March 5, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings will host the Briercrest College Clippers at 5 pm in game two of the best-of-three quarter-final.
