Clipper and Voyageurs Split the weekend

LAC LA BICHE –   Sometimes you're the crocodile; sometimes you're the unlucky wildebeest. Saturday afternoon at the Bold Center, the Portage College Voyageurs were the latter.

Fresh off their first victory of the season the night before, the Voyageurs were a little stale Saturday afternoon, losing 3-0 to the visiting Briercrest Clippers. After peppering Clipper goaltender Dominik Tmej with 50 shots Friday night, Kevin McClelland's troops could only muster 22 on him less than 24 hours later. And while the Voyageurs didn't play a bad game, holding Briercrest to 27 shots on the afternoon, Portage's head coach agreed that his shorthanded lineup didn't have the same jump as the previous game.

"Our back end's a little thin right now, " said McClelland, noting that several defencemen were out of the lineup due to injuries, COVID or family matters. "We need those guys back."

Briercrest scored once in each period, with markers from Reagan Poncelet, Cole Stevenson and Caleb Dolman and played a strong defensive game, giving up few Grade A scoring chances. McClelland was quick to credit the opposition, while at the same time noting that the Voyageurs didn't get many breaks or powerplays.

"[Briercrest] played hard but we knew they were going to play hard," he said. "They shut us down. They didn't give us a lot. They didn't get a lot neither, though. The first goal was a rebound that bounced off one of their bodies into the net. You know, even their third goal, a powerplay goal, bounced off their guy right to their stick to the open net. You know, they got a few breaks on that."

Despite the setback, McClelland is optimistic his players can build upon the pair of weekend games to continue their push for a playoff spot. They have a chance to put Saturday's frustrations behind them next Thursday when they travel to Red Deer Polytechnic to play the Kings.

"Hopefully we get a little healthier on defence and get our guys back…and we just keep marching forward," said McClelland.
