Kings Get Clutch Goaltending As They Edge The Clippers
by Sam and Jeremy Demoskoff
A bounce here, a bounce there… That's likely what's on the mind of the Briercrest Clippers as they came out on the wrong side of a 3-0 decision that was much closer than the scoreline suggests.
"We played a better game today," commented Curtis Wiebe, Briercrest's player of the game with three shots and a physical presence. "They're a good team, but we have a positive mindset knowing that we can compete with any team in the league."
The Clippers put six past Red Deer's Arik Weersink the first time they met this season, but the Kings netminder was stellar this weekend as he managed to pitch a shutout in consecutive games.
It was not for lack of trying, however. Trey Doell, Jacob Arsenault, and Brandon Kelly were buzzing- combining for twelve shots. Briercrest came out with a strong effort as they looked to solidify their hold on a playoff spot.
With the teams shooting early and often, both goaltenders had to be sharp. Dominik Tmej was sensational as he turned aside a puck hammered by Red Deer's Konrad Belcourt. The game remained a scoreless tie until 17:29 of the second period, when the Kings finally struck.
The Clippers created a number of dangerous scoring chances in the third period as they pressed for the equalizer. Zach Ashworth had a good opportunity early, and Halen Cordoni and Cameron Braun were each sprung for breakaways but couldn't quite get that bounce. A late powerplay for Briercrest had the fans on the edge of their seats as they anticipated overtime, but Weersink was dialled in and deserved his team's player of the game honours.
Two goals for the guests in the final minute rounded out what was a nailbiter of a matchup.
While the result didn't go their way, the Clippers know that they will be rewarded as they continue to play at this level. They'll look to put this in the rearview mirror as they travel to Lac La Biche for a pair of games against the Voyageurs. "It was a tough loss," reflected Wiebe, "but there are positives going into next weekend."
