Trojans and Thunder settle for a draw

CALGARY, ALTA., (Jan. 24, 2020) - The SAIT Trojans men's hockey game Friday night had a bit of everything. Everything but a winner.

In an exciting back and forth contest played at SAIT, the Trojans and Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder had to settle for a 4-4 draw in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest.

SAIT sees their record move to 9-6-1-3, while the Thunder go to 7-9-1-2.

The opening period saw the teams trade goals 81 seconds apart when Concordia's Charlie Gawlicki scored short-handed and SAIT's Colton McCarthy (4th year, Salmon Arm, BC, Geographic Information Systems) tipped in a shot on the power play.

McCarthy finished the game with a goal and two assists.

In the second period, SAIT took their first lead of the game when Kurtis Rutledge (2nd year, Calgary, Business Administration) scored 3:27 in.

Concordia replied with a pair of goals when Ben Sowa and Keegan Tiringer before the Trojans tied the game again at 4-4 thanks to a goal from Eric Krienke (3rd year, Calgary, Bachelor of Business Administration).

In the final period, Concordia took the lead yet again when Tyler Benko beat SAIT goalie Kyle Dumba (1st year, Calgary, Business Administration) 33 seconds in on the power play.

But again, the Trojans would find a way to tie the contest as Parker Evans-Campbell (4th year, High River, Alta., Bachelor of Business Administration) with less than nine minutes left.

The teams played five minutes of 4-on-4 overtime, and five more of 3-on-3 overtime before settling for a draw.

The split of points is nothing new to these teams, as their first semester weekend set saw the Trojans win one game 3-2 in overtime and tie 5-5 in the other.

SAIT and Concordia will wrap up their weekend series Saturday night in Edmonton at 7pm.
