Griffins Storm the Thunder in Battle of Edmonton

Coming off of a four game winning streak, the Concordia Thunder were put to the test Friday night against the city rival MacEwan Griffins that saw a very one sided contest as the Griffins defeated the Thunder 9-1.

It was the Griffins who struck first as #16 Colin Schmidt scored his first of the night to take the lead early on in the opening minutes of the game. The pace of the first period had fans excited for another thrilling game between these two teams as it saw battles at both ends of the rink. The Griffins out shot the Thunder 11-8 in the period as we were left with a one goal game at the intermission.

Things were looking great for Concordia as they started the 2nd period with the man advantage however a short handed goal from #19 Cam Gotaas stunned the Thunder. Two more unanswered goals soon followed, all of which were short handed. After two periods the Griffins led by a score of 4-0.

The third period saw a lot of penalty trouble from both teams however the Griffins were able to continue to press as they would carry on to win the contest 9-1. The lone goal from the Thunder came from #23 Rory Davidson at the 1:32 mark.

The Big Kahuna Players of the game were #16 Colin Schmidt (4 goals) for the Griffins and #11 Ian McLellan for the Thunder.

The two teams will face each other again tomorrow night at the Downtown Community Arena in Edmonton starting at 6:00PM
