Five Goal Period Lifts Griffins to Win Over the Thunder

EDMONTON, AB - The Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder (2-8-1-1) played host to cross-town rival MacEwan University Griffins (9-2-1) on Saturday night, with the Griffins coming away with a 7-3 victory on the back of a 5-goal explosion in the 2nd period.

The Thunder opened the scoring early in the 1st period with a goal by #9 Matt Benko to go up 1-0 over the Griffins. Despite being outshot 10-8 in the period, the Thunder took the lead into the locker room at the intermission.

The 2nd period saw a lot of back and forth action at both ends of the rink to start off, but the first place Griffins took control in the latter half with a 5 goal outburst behind stellar play on the defensive end that included a short-handed goal from #21 Brett Njaa. The Thunder tried to mount the late rally with a single goal in the period, and trailed 5-2 at the break.

The Griffins picked up where they left off in the 3rd period with two more goals on their way to a 7-3 win over the Thunder, placing them at the top of the ACAC standings.

The Kahunaverse Sport Group Players of the Game for the visiting MacEwan University Griffins was #25 Tyler Morrison and for the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder #6 Ben Sowa.

Next up for the Thunder will be a home-and-home series against the Portage College Voyageurs on November 23 & 24, while the Griffins will take on the NAIT Ooks.
