Men's Basketball Quarter-Final Match: Lakeland vs STMU

Caronport, SK (February 27, 2025) - The St. Mary Lightning men's team came out of the gates with aggressive drives and shooting well to take an early lead 13-6 after 4 minutes. Adoji had a great first quarter with strong drives and 3-point shooting. The Rustlers fought hard but struggled dropping shots and getting inside, facing stifling defense.
After one quarter, it tightened up, with a score for the St. Mary Lightning 25 and the Lakeland Rustlers 21. The Rustlers found a way to score with passing, strong rebounding, and timely 3s. They were hit with 5 fouls that would become important later on.
The second quarter started with another strong start by the Lightning, stretching their lead to 44-28 by the 6-minute mark. They were able to transition quickly and finish strong. By the end of the first half, the Lightning held a 53-36 lead, managing the ball well and playing efficiently at the rim.
The Rustlers came out firing in the 3rd, with 3s from several players, closing the gap to 10 points, which is where it stayed for most of the quarter. #21 for the Rustlers fouled out in the middle of the 3rd, making an early exit from the game. It was a tough contest with a lot of physicality and strong drives, tight defense, but the Lightning was holding on with a 14-point advantage at the end of the 3rd: 73-59.
The 4th quarter was fast and aggressive as defense dominated the play. Blocked shots and goal tending demonstrated the leaping ability, as well as a few dunks. At the 6-minute marker, the lead was 17 for the Lightning, but the Rustlers did not give in, drawing to within 10. The Rustlers continued to battle, but that was as close as they could get, as the game ended with a 93-81 win going to the Lightning. This was an exciting start to the tournament!
