Lethbridge takes Bronze in Championships

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks and Keyano College Huskies matched up in the bronze medal game on Saturday afternoon. Keyano was looking to bounce back after losing their first game all year on Friday night against SAIT.

The teams were evenly matched over the course of the first in what looked might be a low-scoring affair. The Huskies got their first lead of the game at 10-8 with four minutes to play. But turnovers plagued the Huskies late, racking up a total of seven in the quarter giving the Kodiaks room to take back the lead 23-19 by the end of the quarter.

Unbothered by the poor finish, the Huskies kicked off the second quarter on a 10-0 run, holding the Kodiaks scoreless over the first four minutes. Declan Peterson finally ended the drought for the Kodiaks. Momentum shifted back in their favour not long after as they closed out the half with a 14-point swing to take back the lead 41-37 heading into the break.

The game remained a defensive affair to start the third. The Huskies slowly chipped away at the lead and finally brought it back to a tie in the closing minute of the quarter. A last-second jumper by the Kodiaks gave them back the lead 55-54 going into the fourth.

It took over 90 seconds before a pair of free throws from Kodiaks' Taylor Barfuss got the first points on the board of the quarter. Lethbridge slowly kept building on their advantage hitting a double-digit lead with just two minutes remaining. The deficit proved insurmountable with the Huskies shooting just 3-18 and 0-10 from three over the final quarter.

Taylor Barfuss led the Kodiaks to their podium finish with 22 points off the bench to earn player of the game for his side.
